Definition
What is strategy development?
Strategy development is the process in which leadership sets the company's direction: which goals you want to reach, where and how you want to compete, and which resources need to be put to work.
Many companies draw up action and project plans without a real strategy behind them. But it is the strategy that ties the plans together and makes it possible to prioritise when new opportunities or problems arise.
The strategy
Sets the direction: the goal, the reasons for the new course, the key milestones and the resources that need to be put to work.
The action plans
Turn the strategy into projects and concrete activities that support the goal. This is where execution begins.
When does it make sense to get help?
- ✓You need to set a new direction after a change of ownership, a merger or new leadership.
- ✓The strategy exists on paper but is not turning into action in the organisation.
- ✓The management team does not agree on the priorities.
- ✓The market has changed, and the strategy needs to be renewed.
- ✓The board or owners expect a clear plan for growth.
The programme
How we work with strategy development
A strategy programme is always tailored to your situation. We typically work in four phases – from a solid foundation to a strategy that lives in the organisation.
Strategic foundation
We start with your values, mission and vision and take a critical look at whether the foundation will hold over time. We find the gaps before the strategy is built on top.
Strategy development
In strategy workshops with the executive and management team, we clarify where and how you want to compete, and what needs to be prioritised.
Execution
The strategy is executed through your leaders. We help the management team mobilise the organisation, build engagement and follow up.
Renewal
We run regular strategy workshops so the strategy adapts to new knowledge and new opportunities, and focus is maintained.
We see a direct link between people's performance and the successful execution of even the most complex strategies. That is why we work closely with the management team all the way and can combine the strategy programme with management team development and leadership development.

From plan to action
Strategy execution: when the plan meets everyday reality
The step from plan to action may not seem long. But the strategy has to hold when day-to-day operations, time pressure and unexpected change kick in. That is why we make the strategy resilient from the development stage and work with three questions:
Does execution require organisational development?
Can the current organisational structure go the distance, and are there structural barriers that could get in the way?
What do we do when we meet resistance?
When processes stall or the market changes, there must be resources that can drive the strategy forward.
How do we maintain momentum?
The strategy must be able to adapt along the way, so it is not lost in day-to-day operations and unexpected obstacles.
Leaders are key when a strategy is executed. That is why the programme can be combined with a Leadership Academy for your leaders.
Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions about strategy development
What is strategy development?
Strategy development is the process in which leadership sets the company's direction: which goals you want to reach, where and how you want to compete, and which resources need to be put to work. The strategy is then turned into action plans and projects.
What is the difference between strategy development and strategy execution?
Strategy development is about setting the direction. Strategy execution is about getting the organisation to act on it. Many strategies fail in execution, which is why we work with both – and with the leaders who have to execute the strategy.
Who does People & Performance help with strategy development?
We work with executive teams, management teams and boards in large international corporations, small and medium-sized companies and start-ups. Private equity funds also use us as their partner.
What happens in a strategy workshop?
We tailor the workshop to your situation. Typically, the executive or management team challenges the current strategy, clarifies priorities and agrees on next steps, so the strategy is renewed and focus is maintained.
How long does a strategy programme take?
It depends on your starting point and ambitions. We agree on scope and timeline after an initial conversation.
